Poor Posture Can Be a Pain in the B...
Back pain costs the economy billions of dollars a year. It is responsible for the majority of lost work hours due to occupational injury.
Our spine is composed of thirty-three individual bones and is S-shaped, which makes it sixteen times stronger than if it were straight. It is extremely flexible moving forward and to the sides, but not backwards, and neck and lower back rotate. The spine is covered by ligaments and strong muscles which fortify it, but abdominal muscles are the champions regarding torso support.
More than thirty million Americans suffer from lower back pain, and of those, 80% have poor posture and back support, flaccid muscles and little flexibility. Lower back pain is the result of lack of movement. Obesity, a consequence of sedentarism, puts excess weight over the abdominal muscles, thus, adding pressure to the back. Good posture releases the strain on the spinal ligaments and joints, pelvis and legs. This is why caring for your posture and back support while walking, sitting and lifting is fundamental for eliminating lower back pain.
The trick to finding the best posture for you is in standing with your pelvis tilted in a neutral position; pulling in the abdominal muscles and tightening the buttocks. In this way, you are distributing your weight evenly and protecting your lower back. Relax the shoulders by putting them down and a little back and keep your knees slightly bent.
If you catch yourself slumping, try placing your elbows against your waist side while bending your arms in a ninety degree angle with your hands in front of you. Without moving the elbows, rotate your hands and forearms to the sides. Shoulder blades will move towards each other, lifting your chest and mending your posture and back support. At this time, just lower your forearms and maintain this posture. Walk with your head, trunk and thighs aligned, hold shoulders back but relaxed, chest held high and stomach tucked in.
Good posture and back support are essential when sitting, thus, to help you keep them, the chair must support your back with the knees lower than the hips. When lifting objects, lift from the hips, pulling with the upper hamstrings and buttocks. Contract the muscles in the spine to keep your back straight and tighten the abdominal muscles. Lift with your whole body, not with your back and keep the object close to the body.
Lots of people lack the body mechanics and strength to keep a good posture and back support, but luckily, there is help. Exercising your abdominal muscles, your back and pelvis, will slowly correct posture and relieve the pain. There is also TruComfort, an ergonomic seat specially designed to enhance posture and back support.
A personalized combo of exercise along with the TruComfort, will prevent or relieve lower back pain by correcting your posture and back support. Among the best exercises for this purpose are:
-Pelvic tilt. Lie down, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tighten the buttocks, put the stomach in and glue your lower back to the floor, hold for 5 to 20 seconds, release and repeat ten times.
-Curl-ups. In the same position as the above, slowly lift just the shoulders and head with hands on your chest or behind the head. Do three sets of 10 to 25 repetitions.
-Lower back stretch. Lie down and bring the knees to the chest. Embrace them with your hands while shoulders remain on the floor. Pull the knees closer to your chest and hold for 15 seconds, then release and repeat.
-Lower back and hamstring stretch. Lie down and bend the knees. Pull one thigh towards your chest with the knee bent and hold for 15 seconds. Straighten the leg up towards the ceiling to stretch the back of it, hold it with your hands and hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Put the leg down and do the same with the other leg.
